Program Overview

Welcome to the MSKUS Fellowship Program by The American Academy of Musculoskeletal Ultrasound (AAMU): The Exclusive Providers of FMSK® Certification Worldwide.

At AAMU, we are committed to offering the most advanced and comprehensive programs in Musculoskeletal Sonography worldwide. Our Fellowship Program is designed to take you to an expert level in MSKUS, ensuring unparalleled opportunities for professional growth and remarkable improvements in patient outcomes.

Our Fellowship Program consists of:

1. Online Pathology – Upper Extremity (Foundational Level)

This module focuses on the sonographic evaluation of common pathologies affecting the shoulder, elbow, wrist, and hand. Participants will learn to recognize normal and abnormal ultrasound appearances of tendons, ligaments, joints, and nerves in the upper limb. The course is self-paced, offering flexibility for busy healthcare professionals.

2. Online Pathology – Lower Extremity (Foundational Level)

This module focuses on the sonographic evaluation of common pathologies affecting the hip, knee, ankle, and foot. Participants will learn to recognize normal and abnormal ultrasound appearances of tendons, ligaments, joints, and nerves in the lower limb. The course is self-paced, offering flexibility for busy healthcare professionals.

3. Two 2-Day Live Scanning Protocol Courses for the Upper and Lower Extremities

These modules begin by providing you a detailed presentation of basic principles of ultrasound and the normal sonoanatomy of the upper and lower extremities including wrist, hand, elbow, shoulder, ankle, foot, knee, hip, and spine.

Following a didactic lecture for each joint, you will view scanning demonstrations, learn detailed scanning protocols, and begin hands-on practice sessions. These sessions will help you to become familiar with handling the ultrasound device, accurately and efficiently obtaining and labeling images, and learning how to interpret the results effectively.

4. 1-Day Live Upper Extremity Advanced Pathology Course

1-Day Live Upper Extremity Pathology designed to take your MSKUS knowledge to the next level, followed by access to our Report Writing Module.

5. 1-Day Live Lower Extremity Advanced Pathology Course

1-Day Live Lower Extremity Pathology designed to take your MSKUS knowledge to the next level, followed by access to our Report Writing Module.

6. Report Writing Course (online)

This online module will cover the important elements of report writing in a step-by-step format followed by report writing discussion to reinforce the learning. The module will cover important principles of physics to show how artifacts may affect report interpretation, proper labelling of image, important elements of a well written report, normal vs abnormal tissue appearances, ultrasound terminology, image analysis algorithm. This course includes practice of image analysis algorithms with report writing exercises.

7. 3-Day Live Advanced Musculoskeletal Ultrasound Applications (Fellowship) Module

This module is designed for participants who have successfully completed the Upper and Lower Extremity Modules. It provides advanced training in normal sonoanatomy and sonopathology of the upper and lower extremities, including the wrist and hand, elbow, shoulder, ankle and foot, knee, hip, peripheral nerves, and other miscellaneous topics. Each anatomical region is introduced with a didactic lecture, followed by lab demonstrations and hands-on practical exercises.

The module emphasizes interactive learning and covers intermediate to advanced pathology, anatomical variants, image optimization, image orientation, and a structured image interpretation algorithm. Additional advanced miscellaneous topics are included to deepen understanding and enhance clinical application. Participants also engage in literature review and discussion of key considerations when using point-of-care ultrasound (POCUS) in clinical practice.

Building on prior modules, this advanced module provides comprehensive knowledge of musculoskeletal anatomy and its application in accurately identifying both common and uncommon musculoskeletal pathologies. Learning is delivered through a combination of lectures, labs, interactive sessions, and case-based reviews with critique.

Upon completion of this module, students will become proficient in musculoskeletal ultrasound, capable of performing assessments and guided procedures at an advanced level and applying knowledge to optimize patient care.

At the conclusion of the module, fellowship participants complete a multiple-choice written exam and a practical skills exam. Certification is awarded to those achieving 70% or higher on both components.
