☞ The Great Advantages of Using MSKUS
Musculoskeletal Ultrasound has opened new horizons in the healthcare profession dealing with the musculoskeletal and neuromuscular systems.
Recent advances in ultrasound technology have created a functional and practical approach to evaluate joints, muscles, ligaments, and even nerves. Clinical evidence and research support using ultrasound as the first diagnostic test for numerous musculoskeletal conditions. Diagnostic ultrasound offers significant advantages compared to X-ray, CT, and MRI, regarding safety and effectiveness. Musculoskeletal ultrasound simply uses sonic waves, and there is no exposure to radiation.
At the same time, diagnostic ultrasound is noninvasive and offers real-time imaging, allowing for examinations of structures at rest and in motion. This ability to capture the movement of musculoskeletal components differentiates it from other imaging modalities and can permit a more accurate diagnosis.
Musculoskeletal Ultrasonography can be performed by the physical therapist at the point of care. If a patient needs it, you have it available right there.
☞ In a recent multicenter clinical study that was done and included over 465 patients, the outcomes were astonishing…
- Treatment plans and patient management were adjusted for 62% of patients following MSKUS testing.
- 26% of patients were referred to physicians and/or surgeons and received non-surgical (injections) or surgical interventions.
- 16% of patients had a significant change in their management post-test which led to a change in their earlier diagnosis.
- Conservative PT management was changed or altered in 20% of patients post-test.
But the most striking results of this study were:
- 90% of patients agreed or strongly greed that they were better able to understand their problem, were reassured about their problem and were better able to manage their problem.
- 98% agreed or strongly agreed that the diagnostic test provided high perceived value for them.
☞ The Important Role of AIUM
The American Institute of Ultrasound in Medicine (AIUM) released a groundbreaking statement declaring physical therapists as qualified providers to perform and/or interpret musculoskeletal ultrasound examinations.
This decision by the AIUM further affirms the evolving capacity of physical therapists to perform this diagnostic examination (along with additional types of examinations) and be recognized by insurance companies as qualified providers.
